Thomas the Apostle is often referred to as Thomas the Twin, and Thomas means “twin” in Aramaic and in Greek is Didymus. Correct me if I’m wrong :). My question is, who is Thomas’s twin?
Signed, Philip
Dear Philip,
In researching your question, I was unable to verify that Thomas had a twin. It appears that he was called “Thomas the twin” due to the translation of his Greek name “Didymus” into the Aramaic word “Thomas” both meaning “twin”.
Two books were consulted:
1. New American Bible:
A. The footnote in the New American Bilble with reference to Jn. 11,16 where Thomas is called Didymus. The footnote says this: “Called Didymus: Didymus is the Greek word for twin. Thomas is derived from the Aramaic word for twin.” B. Quote from the New American Bible, St.Joseph medium size Edition. “In an ancient Syriac version and in the Gospel of Thomas( #80,11-12) his given name, Judas, is supplied.”
2. The Dictionary of the Bible by John L. MacKenzie S.J., we learn that there is no indication that Thomas had a twin.
So it seems that even though his name means ‘twin’, Thomas may not have actually had a twin.
Hope you find this answer helpful in satisfying your curiosity of Thomas.
Blessings and Peace,

aka Fr. Bill C.Ss.R.
